Dissertation – Writing A Good Dissertation Text
Dissertation is a text that is characterized by the defense of an idea, a point of view, or by questioning about a particular subject.
In general, in order to obtain greater clarity in the exposition from a point of view, one usually distributes the matter in three parts.
introduction – which presents the idea or point of view that will be defended;
development or argumentation – in which the point of view is developed to try to convince the reader; for this, a solid argument must be used, to cite examples, to resort to expert opinion, to provide data, and so on.
conclusion – which closes the text, consistent with development, with the arguments presented.
As for language, the denotative meaning of words prevails and the direct order of prayers prevails. The coherence of ideas and the use of cohesive elements are also very important in the text, especially of the conjunctions that explain the relations between the ideas presented. Therefore, the elaboration of a text is not centered on the poetic function of language, but on the placement and defense of ideas and the way in which these ideas are articulated. When a language figure is used, it should always be used with argumentative value, as an additional instrument for the defense of a certain idea.
The Standard Scheme
Initially, you should not confuse schema with sketch.
It is important to look at a fact: each dissertation, depending on the theme and the argument, asks for a scheme. A subjective dissertation, for example, allows the producer of the text to use certain resources that would be inappropriate in an objective dissertation.
Scheme is a guide that we establish to be followed, in which we put in succinct sentences (or even in simple words) the script for the elaboration of the text. In the draft, we are giving form to the writing, because in him the ideas placed in the scheme begin to be written, taking the form of sentences until arriving at a coherent text.
The first step in the development of a scheme is to have understood the proposed theme, because it will not do any good if it is not appropriate to the theme.
Because it is a script to follow, one must divide the schema in the parts of which the essay is composed. If we are to write a dissertation, the scheme should present the three parts of the dissertation: introduction, development and conclusion, which can be represented by the letters a, b and c, respectively.
In letter a, you should put the thesis that you will defend; in letter b, words that summarize the arguments you will present to support the thesis; in letter c, a word that represents the conclusion to be given.
When we are doing the development scheme (letter b), it is common to come up with many ideas. Record them all, even if later you will not use them. These ideas usually come without order; therefore, it is necessary to order them later, selecting the best ones and placing them in order of importance. To this process we call the hierarchy of ideas.
In order not to waste time elaborating another scheme, the hierarchy of ideas can be done by means of numbers assigned to the words that appear in the diagram, following the order in which they will be used in the production of the text.
We now present an example of the scheme with already hierarchical ideas:
Theme: The death penalty: against or in favor?
a) against, does not solve.
b) 1. right to life – religion
2. other countries – USA
3. judicial error
4. low classes
c) ineffective: solution: eradication of poverty.
Once the scheme is done, it is followed step by step, transforming the words into phrases, giving form to the essay.
In the example given, in the introduction you would declare yourself averse to the death penalty because it does not solve the problem of increasing crime in the country.
In development, you would use the arguments that all people have the right to life, enshrined in religions; that in countries where it exists, citing the United States as an example, it did not reduce crime; that there can always be a judicial error that leads to killing an innocent man; that in the Brazilian case it would be applied only to the lower classes; who can not afford good lawyers; and, finally, that the Brazilian legal tradition enshrines the right to life and repudiates the death penalty.
In conclusion, I would return to the thesis by insisting on the ineffectiveness of this type of sentence and indicating other solutions to solve the problem of crime, such as the eradication of misery.
The Dissertation Grammar
As for the formal aspects, the dissertation exempts the abusive use of figures of language, as well as the connotative value of words (see: we are talking about not to be abused). By its characteristics, the essay text requires a more sober, denotative, blunt language (after all, the reader is convinced for the force of the arguments, not for the fatigue); hence the use of the third person is preferable.
Unlike the narration, the dissertation does not present a temporal progression; the concepts are generic, abstract and, in general, do not involve a situation of time and space; so the use of verbs in the present. Unlike the description, which is characterized by the simple period, the dissertation works with the compound period (usually by subordination), with the chain of ideas; in this type of construction, the correct use of the connectives is fundamental to obtain clear, cohesive, elegant text.
